ALL VA-BRED STARTERS EARN OVER $12.5 MILLION IN 2013

Both total starts and total earnings for Va-breds declined last year, confirming the negative impact of Virginia’s ongoing declining Thoroughbred foal crop.. All Virginia-breds accounted for 3,621 starts worldwide as reported by the Jockey Club and www.equineline.com with total earnings of $12,590,315 in 2013. In 2012, Virginia-breds made 3,769 total starts and earned $12,935,616 worldwide.

Racing in North America accounted for 3,331 of those starts and $11,650,353 in earnings while foreign racing added another $939.966.  According to the Jockey Club reports, Virginia-breds raced in far flung locations including Puerto Rico, Great Britain, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South America, the Caribbean and the United Arab Emirates.

Domestically, Virginia-breds accounted for 402 wins and $6,792,037 in first place earning in North America last year.  The winning horses that are registered with the Virginia Breeders Fund will be eligible for 2013 Breeders Awards. In the past, Breeders Awards did not include wins in Canada and Puerto Rico.

In 2012, Virginia-breds made 3,769 total starts and earned $12,935,616 worldwide. In North America, 3,549 Virginia-breds earned $12,417,801 while internationally, 220 Virginia-bred starts earned $517,815. In North America, Virginia-breds won 455 races and $7,232,446 in purses.

Overall starts worldwide declined 4% from 3,621in 2013 from 3,769 starts in 2012 while total earnings declined 3%.  The number of North American wins declined from 455 in 2012 to 402 in 2013 (-11.6%), and  the purses earned in those winning races decreased from $7,232,446 in 2012 to $6,792,037 in 2013 – a decrease of $440,409 or 6%.

In 2012, Virginia-breds won a total of 37 starter handicap races combined with other conditions, 47 allowances, 25 allowance optional claiming, 190 claiming, 89 maiden claiming, 57 maiden specials, 11 starters and 19 stakes as well as other races with various conditions.  The average distance for the 455 winning races in North America was 6.97 furlongs and the average for all starts worldwide was 7.85 furlongs and the average earnings per Va-bred win was $15,895.49.

Virginia-breds won in Maryland 69 times (Laurel, Pimlico and Timonium) at Colonial Downs 66 times, West Virginia (Charles Town and Mountaineer), Pennsylvania 55 times (Parx, Penn National and Presque Isle), Virginia 39 times (Colonial Downs), Florida 32 times (Gulfstream Park, Tampa Bay and Calder), New York 25 times (Aqueduct, Belmont, Finger Lakes and Saratoga), Delaware (Delaware Park) 14 times and Kentucky 9 times (Churchill, Keeneland and Turfway)

In 2013, Virginia-breds won 30 starter handicaps and combined with other conditions, 35 allowance races, 22 allowance/optional claiming races, 157 claiming races, 53 maiden special weights and 26 stakes races. The average distance for the 402 winning races in North America was 7.03 furlongs and the average for all starts worldwide was 7.85 furlongs and the average earnings per Va-bred win in North America was $16,895.61 – an increase of 6%.

Virginia-bred s won 80 races in West Virginia, 41 in Maryland, 39 in Pennsylvania, 37 in Virginia, 33 in Florida, 26 races in New York, 15 in Kentucky , and 14 in Delaware.

VIRGINIA-BRED MAIL WINS AQUEDUCT STAKES

A small but quality field entered the gate for the Listed Traskwood Stakes at Aqueduct on December 27th but it was Va-bred Mail that proved much the best. Equibase Chart.

In his previous two wins, Mail was either first or second at every call and the one and one-sixteenth mile $100,000 Traskwood Stakes was no different as the sophomore colt lead from gate to wire. Mail now has three wins from six career starts and $146,379 in earnings.

Bred by Edward P. Evans in Virginia, Mail was purchased by his current owners Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren Jr., at the 2011 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $470,000. He is out of G2 winner Tap Dance, she a half-sister to G1 Carter Handicap winner Swagger Jack and to the dam of G1 winner Malibu Prayer.
