God Bless the Irish

Not only are they good horsemen, you’ve got to love their sense of humor. While preparing for a Stakes Photos post, I came across this: The Paddy Power “Is It 2021 Yet?” Stakes at Leopardstown on September 12 (coincidentally, my wife’s birthday) won by Tiger Moth (IRE).

My previous knowledge was based on my visit to the Irish National Stud, Curragh and Listowel on a trip to the Emerald Isle way back in 2007 and a lifetime of “Irish” stories and tall tales. The 2007 trip was theoretically a golf trip, but I made everybody humor me with several horse racing related side trips.

I was always entertained by my foxhunting friends that said if the Irish thought you were a good rider (or had the reputation of one), they would put you on a difficult horse which would deposit its Yank rider in the first ditch encountered.

I vividly recall stories told by Bill Graves and Noel Twyman back in the day. Devious, but funny and always entertaining. Not to mention the shopping cart story at Saratoga with Geoffery Russell (another clever, funny and endearing Irishman). — GP
