As you may have read, the newly formed Virginia Thoroughbred Project has recently replaced the TRF at James Madison’s Montpelier. Through collaboration of all three entities involved, we have been able to make a smooth transition. We are very fortunate to be able to remain in the same location at Montpelier and retain our excellent staff of trained professionals. The VTP has adopted the entire herd previously under the care of TRF, enabling all 41 former racehorses to remain at this beautiful pastoral location. This was an important part of our agreement as more than 50% of our current herd is over the age of twenty and not really suitable for relocation.
The Montpelier Foundation has been instrumental in easing this transition process. We are very grateful for their unflagging support and look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship in the years to come.
We have a matching grant of $20,000 which will give us a substantial boost as we embark on this new adventure. We are asking you to take advantage of this opportunity to double the impact of your donation in this initial year of transition.
The average cost to us per horse per year is $5,000. This is inclusive of all costs and comes to well over $200,000 total per year. This figure has remained fairly steady over the past several years and should give you an idea as to what we are up against. Any amount you feel you are able to donate to the care of these magnificent animals, who have given so much of themselves, is greatly appreciated.
