On the breakdown of Mongolian Gold, trainer Todd Pletcher said on the Thoroughbred Daily News Green Group podcast that he doesn’t think there is an acceptable answer, but that the industry must do better starting from the birth of each foal.

In addition, he added there are a lot of the issues pointed toward the racetrack and trainers and how the horses are treated prior to yearling and two-year-old sales. He acknowledged that there is no way to “absolutely prevent it from happening,” but the industry can dramatically reduce breakdowns if every effort is made to do so.

“It’s a crisis. In racing, a lot of times, we get through one crisis and then we kind of coast. We can’t let our foot off the pedal. We have to get this thing sorted out and do a lot better than we’re doing now.”  — Todd Pletcher on TDN Green Group podcast.
