More solid results for Virginia-bred yearlings in the second session of Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Yearling Sale yesterday at the auction house’s Timonium venue. The Bay colt by Union Rags out of Kiowa by Stephen Got Even who was Grand Champion at the Virginia Breeders Yearling Futurity back in June sold for $100,000 and made the list of Session Toppers in today’s Thoroughbred Daily News.
The now well-travelled colt had previously made and unsuccessful trip to Saratoga with his breeders Corner Farm’s (Ned Moore & Gillian Gordon Moore) and John Behrendt. This time, it seems as the much shorter trip from Boyce, VA to Timonium, MD was just what was ordered as the handsome colt was the only Virginia-bred in the group of 11 yearlings that sold for six figures over the two day sale.
Overall the two sessions posted a slightly lower gross from last year when the catalog generated $7,318,700 as opposed to the $7,275,900 from the past two days. The total number of yearlings sold were similar 300 (2019) and 328 (2018) and the Median price dropped from $15,000 to $14,000. The average overall price with the 102 sold was $26,275 an increase of 13% over last year’s $23,252 while the number of unsold yearlings dropped to 81 in 2019 as opposed to the 94 that did not retain their reserve price in 2018.
