VRC RENEWS VA GOLD CUP’S PARI-MUTUEL LICENSE

The Virginia Racing Commission renewed the license for the Virginia Gold Cup (VGC) and the International Gold Cup, the only two Virginia NSA-sanctioned steeplechase meets with pari-mutuel wagering.

VGC chairman Dr. Will Allison reported that ticket sales and general interest increased based on the fact that pari-mutuel wagering would be available the first time since the two pari-mutuel meets held at Morven Park some years ago.

He noted that the Gold Cup had conducted meetings with United Tote and their WiFi provider in an attempt to resolve the issues that had plagued the 2013 renewals of both races and caused the VRC to voice some ongoing concerns. Allison noted that the Gold Cup had identified “the glitches and demanded solutions.”

Dr. Al Griffin, the VGCA’s director of racing, explained how the long standing conflict with the Far Hills race meet had forced the IGC to abandon their traditional date and move back one week to the fourth Saturday in October. He noted that a shortage of quality jockeys for the high quality of races offered by the two meets was a key factor.  The new date has NSA approval for the next five years.
