A Hill ‘n Dale-bred Smart Strike filly set a new standard at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton October Fall Yearling Sale when selling to Borges Torrealba Holdings for $800,000 yesterday, a transaction that both helped propel the sale to record gains, and put a spotlight on the remarkable turnaround of an auction with a questionable future just four years ago.
At the end of the three day sale, the cumulative average at October stood at a sale-record $34,117, up 30.6% from last year’s average of $26,127. Likewise, the median of $17,000, up 33.3%, established a new benchmark. The depth of the market was underscored by the buy-back rate, which came in at a very low 16.2%.
