VA-BRED STEEPLECHASE CHAMP TRIES STAKE AT SPA

Maggie Bryant’s Lazy Lane-bred Well Fashioned, recently crowned 2012 Va-Bred Steeplechase Champion, will take on a field of eight others in today’s $75,000 Mrs. Ogden Phipps Stakes at Saratoga.  Fellow Virginian Clarke Ohrstrom will also contest the race with Kisser N run.

Well Fashioned, by Cozzene, out of Crypto’s Best by Cryptoclearance, has won two of her last three starts but makes his first race back since May 11th when she won the Magaret Currey Henley Hurdle Stakes in Nashville.  Prior to that one, the six-year-old trained by Doug Fout was sixth in the Georgia Cup Hurdle Stake in Atlanta and a winner in the Crown Royal Hurdle Stakes at Pine Mountain.

Willie McCarthy will ride.

Just missing in the Henley was Clarke Ohrstrom’s Kisser N Run, who will be seeking her first 2013 victory. In her first start of the year, the five-year-old Pleasant Tap mare had finished second in the Atlanta Steeplechase’s Georgia Cup on April 13. After winning her maiden victory last fall, Kisser N Run was acquired by Ohrstrom and won the Peapack Stakes at Far Hills, N.J. Trainer Richard Valentine named Robbie Walsh to ride.
