VA-BRED AND VA-CONNECTIONS IN $100,000 JOHN’S CALL AT SARATOGA

Virginia-bred Dannhauser looks to make the jump from Colonial Downs to Saratoga when he tries nine other marathoners in the 1 5/8 miles $100,000 John’s Call Stakes.  Bred by Audley Farm, the five-year-old by Johannesburg, out of Hatpin by Smart Strike, heads north after winning the $60,000 Bert Allen Stakes during the Commonwealth Turf Festival.

Dannhauser is looking stretch out from 8.5 furlongs to 13 furlongs, but trainer Kathleen O’Connor isn’t worried about the length of the trip.

“That’s what we’re looking for,” she told the Daily Racing Form. “The field looks strong. I would have loved to have had another race under his belt, but it is what it is.”

Runner-up in the 2013 Colonial Turf Cup, Hyper, will also start in the John’s Call.  He has had two troubled trips when second in the Good Reward and then getting outfinished by longshot London Lane in the Turf Cup.

Star Channel who was bred in Florida by Virginians Sam and Carolyn Rogers will also try the John’s Call.
