PHOTOS OF THE DAY – ACROSS THE POND

OK, we get it.  You’re wondering why a Virginia focused blog frequently features photos from racing in Great Britain, Europe, New Zealand and Australia…Good question. And thanks for framing is as a question as usually it comes my way as criticism!

(The criticism goes like this: “Why aren’t there more pictures of Virginia horses, who cares about some horse in [fill in the blank]?”  The answer is we publish as many pictures of VA-breds and VA-connected horses as we can get our hands on and the folks at Coady photography are heroes when it comes to this.  Our request for Virginians to send us photos frequently falls on deaf ears. MORAL OF STORY: If you have a win picture, a foal picture or ANY pics of your Virginia horse(s), send them to us and we will figure out a way to publish them. We can’t publish what we don’t have, but I digress…)

The main answer to the question above is simply because these photos are available and somebody (me) likes them. While I have no particular affinity for foreign racing (only been racing in Ireland a couple of times), I do like good horse racing photos, and turf (popular around the world) seems to lend itself to better composition, lighting etc.  While the U.S. has plenty of talented photographers, their work is a little harder to come by and frequently quite a bit more costly. It’s a puzzle I’m working on solving as are many photographers who are struggling to make it all work in the new world of internet publishing.

In the meantime enjoy these images from England by the very talented photographer Alan Crowhurst whose work will be seen here fairly regularly.  (At least until he asks us to stop!)
